What is Altitude Sickness?
We are so excited to celebrate with you in the mountains! Because Buena Vista sits at 7,965 feet above sea level, the air is a bit thinner than many of you are used to. Altitude sickness is REAL & hits everyone differently. It usually kicks in 6–24 hours after arrival, so make sure to stay hydrated before & after arrival!
To make sure you’re feeling 100% & able to celebrate all weekend, here are a few tips:
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Start drinking extra water a few days before you arrive & always keep a bottle with you throughout the weekend.
Take it Easy: You might feel out of breath more easily. Give your body a day to adjust before doing any strenuous hiking.
Watch the Cocktails: Alcohol hits much harder at high altitudes. Pace yourself and match every drink with a glass of water. One drink at sea level often feels like two up here.
Don't Forget Sunscreen: You’re closer to the sun up here, & burns happen much faster!
Listen to your body: If you feel a headache coming on, grab some electrolytes & take a breather.
Common symptoms: If you experience a headache, dizziness, insomnia or nausea, it’s likely the altitude. Rest, drink water, and let us know if you need anything!
What will the weather be like?
In late September, Buena Vista typically sees beautiful, sunny days with highs in the high 60s to low 70s. However, once the sun sets, temperatures drop quickly into the mid-30s to low 40s.
Because we are in the mountains, the sun is very intense, but the air is dry and cool. We recommend dressing in layers so you can stay comfortable from the sunny ceremony through the chilly evening reception. Jackets are recommended for the nights.
Where exactly is Buena Vista?
Buena Vista (or "BV" as the locals call it) is located in the heart of the Rockies, about 2 to 2.5 hours southwest of Denver. It is surrounded by the Collegiate Peaks, which include some of the highest mountains in the state!
Will I need transportation?
You will need transportation to get to Buena Vista. Once you arrive, everything you may need is walking distance from the hotel.
We will not be providing transportation to the Welcome Party or the After Party from the Surf Hotel.
Can I bring a plus-one?
Due to space constraints at our venue, we can only accommodate those listed on your specific invitation. We thank you for understanding!
Is there Uber or Lyft in Buena Vista?
No. Buena Vista is a small, rural town. Please do not count on ride-sharing apps to get around. We recommend carpooling or renting a car.
